Canada hawkweed grows as slender single stems, and does not form clumps. It grows best on sandy soil, often on somewhat acidic leaf litter in jack pine or oak woodlands, savannas, or along streams and lakeshores. It is short lived; seedlings form a rosette of leaves the first year and flowers the second.
